Bug-filled lodgings to get B300m

The National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department plans to invest over 300 million baht to renovate accommodation and outbuildings in the country's four main national parks.

The department is following Natural Resources and Environment Minister Gen Dapong Rattanasuwan's project to spruce up park accommodation, which he said was one of the top priorities for his ministerial term.

He wants lodging at national parks to be raised to meet a "high-end" standard.

Niphon Chotiban, director-general of the parks department, said he has received many complaints about the poor condition of the buildings.

He said some accommodation had been built many years ago. The buildings are mostly made of wood, which traps moisture inside and attracts ants and other insects. He said the bugs would come out and disturb the visitors.

Mr Niphon said the department plans to upgrade them, adding more windows for a better view of nature, and also allowing more sunlight to reduce moisture.

He said the pilot project will be carried out in Inthanond National Park in Chiang Mai province, Erawan National Park in Kanchanaburi, Than Bok Khorani National park in Krabi, and Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima. All of them are grade-A national parks that lure many tourists every year.
