Fourth death on Namtok railway

KANCHANABURI — A 30-year-old man believed to have been intoxicated was run over by the Namtok-bound train in Tha Maka district on Thursday morning, the fourth death on the popular tourist railway in a month.

Pol Lt Chularb Pliddok, a duty officer at Look Kae police station, said Weerapol Poonsawat was crushed to death by a local train heading from Nong Pladuk junction in Ban Pong district of Ratchaburi, known as the starting point of the Death Railway, to Sai Yok waterfall in Kanchanaburi province at moo 5 village in tambon Tha Mai about 7am. 

An empty bottle of ya dong, potent herb-infused alcohol, and a mobile phone were found about 40 metres from Weerapol’s body. 

 Pol Lt Chularb said Weerapol was a construction worker and lived in the area. He was a heavy drinker, according to his relatives. It was possible the man had drunk the ya dong beside the rails, fallen asleep on the track, and was then run over by the train.

Weerapol was the fourth person to  be killed by the Sai Yok waterfall-bound train in the last month.

The accident occurred only the day after a 52-year-old Dutchman fell travelling with his family fell from the train steps and was run over and killed by the following carriage in Sai Yok district. 

On Nov 26, a Greek diplomat was died in the same district when she fell from a train and her head was crushed.

A Thai woman was killed early this month when she was hit by the tourist train from Bangkok to Sai Yok waterfall while talking on her mobile phone, after shopping at the market, while walking across the track in Tha Maka district.
