Prayut says he helped social order

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha says his government in the past three months had maintained order, helped farmers and laid the foundations for Thailand to become a transport hub of the region.

In a press conference at Government House, Gen Prayut said he had no choice but to stage the May 22 coup d'etat to protect the nation's future.

He said that since Sept 12 his government had worked together with the National Council for Peace and Order (the coup council) to maintain order in the country. It had also pushed the integration of work in the government sector, paved the way for national reform and sought justice, which were key to resolving conflicts.

The causes of society's problems were people involved in conflicts and war weapons. They still exist but the justice system could resolve the problems, he said.

Solutions to all cases concerning national conflict should become clear within the next three months, the prime minister said.

Gen Prayut said Thailand could soon sign a memorandum of understanding with China on its contribution to railway development. The three previous governments had been unable to seal an MOU with the northern neighbour, but progress had been made less than a month after the beginning of his government.

He said there could not be any hidden agenda as Thailand would be the focal point of a rail network connected to other countries if it planned on becoming the centre of the region, Gen Prayut said. China has said it will help build standard gauge railway tracks in Thailand.

The prime minister said his government was trying to solve farmers' problems, especially those growing rice and rubber, and the solutions included subsidies.

Another key area of his government's work over the past three months was to create the fundamentals for sustainable development of Thailand. Gen Prayut conceded that he was not satisfied with progress in this area and his government still needed cooperation from all concerned parties to succeed.

He assured that his government was free of corruption.
