Pongpat in hospital for chest pain

Jailed former Central Investigation Bureau chief Pongpat Chayapan was admitted to Central Chest Institute in Nonthaburi on Saturday because of chest pain.

The suspect was taken from Bangkok Remand Prison for a medical examination after he complained of chest pain, as he had exhibited symptoms related to heart disease in the past, said Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri, a police spokesman.

However, his condition is now stable, according to Pol Lt Gen Prawut.

The former CIB chief is accused of heading a ring that amassed billions of baht in cash, property and other assets. More than 20 people have been arrested so far and more are still being sought.

The suspects face numerous charges in connection with receiving bribes in exchange for transferring or promoting police officers, demanding money from oil smuggling gangs, making money from gambling businesses, and laundering money. Some face lese majeste charges for citing the monarchy as a way to gain benefits.

Saturday was second time the disgraced ex-CIB chief had been sent to hospital because of illness believed to have caused by stress since his arrest on lese majeste and other criminal charges last month.

On Dec 2, he was admitted to the Corrections Department hospital for treatment of high blood pressure brought on by stress.

Jailed former deputy CIB chief Kowit Wongrungroj was also treated at the hospital for the same condition on that day.
