Shoppers fled in panic when a large Christmas tree caught fire on the elevated walkway connecting Siam Square One and BTS Siam station on Sunday afternoon. No one was injured.

The fire occurred near the second-floor entrance to the shopping mall in the busy Siam Square area at about 3pm, and sent great clouds of smoke into the sky. An electrical short-circuit on the 5-metre high Christmas tree on the walkway is believed to have started the blaze.
Pathumwan volunteer police were able to contain the fire just before 4pm, but the walkway remained close for some time. Police are inspecting the scene and have yet to give an official cause of the fire.
