UPDATE: Pongpat back in prison

Detained former CIB chief Pongpat Chayapan has been released from hospital and sent back to the Corrections Department Hospital to complete his recovery from coronary artery disease treatment.

Pol Lt Gen Pongpat, 58, was taken from Bangkok Remand Prison for a medical examination at Central Chest Institute in Nonthaburi on Saturday after he experienced chest pain and stress.  

Department of Medical Services director-general Supan Srithamma told Thairath Online on Sunday that the institute’s medical personnel completed balloon angioplasty for Pol Lt Gen Pongpat who had narrowed coronary arteries on Saturday night. His condition was judged as stable and after a rest at the hospital he was released at 2pm. 

Department of Corrections director-general Witthaya Suriyawong said the former police officer had suffered no complications from the operation. 

It was the second time the ex-Central Investigation Bureau chief had been sent to hospital because of illness believed to have been caused by stress since his arrest on lese majeste and other criminal charges last month.
