Website launched to help women abroad

Eight state agencies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a website to help Thai women who get into difficulties overseas, Social Development and Human Security Ministry permanent secretary Wichian Chawalit says.

The website — www.Yingthai.net — was opened following the MoU signing ceremony between the Department of Social Development and Welfare, the Consular Affairs Department, the Office of the Attorney-General, the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Employment, the Department of Provincial Administration, the Immigration Bureau, and Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited.

Mr Wichian said the website will help Thai women who already live overseas and women who are considering moving abroad in the future. It could help women who run into problems with public agencies, consular difficulties, or who fall foul of the law, including victims of crime.

The website contains news updates, an information service, an emergency hotline, and offers a video call function to the website administrator who can answer queries.

Women can also call a Thai volunteer who is based in their country through the website.

Figures released in March 2013 suggest more than one million Thais reside in 66 countries and most of them are legal immigrants, he said.
