Love for mum spurs failed escape

CHACHOENGSAO — A 31-year-old drug convict escaped after hearing his unsuspended four-month jail sentence and, once re-captured, claimed he wanted to spend time with his mother during the New Year holiday.

Instead of allowing police to finish their work day quietly, Surasit Srikosol, 31, forced officers from Muang Chachoengsao police station, court police and security guards to work up a sweat when he took off on foot from the provincial court during the sentence hearing and went into hiding in a grass field nearby.

Mr Surasit reportedly shook off the hand of a policeman who took him into custody after his sentence was read in the court room. Other security officers on the premises also failed to intercept him.

The man ran across a provincial public park, causing panic among many park-goers. He then climbed up a two-metre-high concrete wall to hide in a vast grass field behind the park.

It took more than 20 security officers a while to re-arrest the fugitive. After the arrest, Mr Surasit said he made the failed attempt because he wanted to be with his mother during the New Year holiday.

“I miss my mom and want to see her during the New Year because I haven’t seen her for a long time,” he said.

Mr Surasit faced an additional charge for violating the court’s regulations, police said.
