Fire razes 150-year-old army buildings

RATCHABURI - A fire at the Army Engineer Department, Panurangsri Camp, has destroyed two buildings built during the reign of King Rama IV (from 1851 to 1868) early Wednesday.

Pol Lt Col Jakrawal Aranyawat, an investigating officer at Muang Ratchaburi Police station, said the wooden building caught fire around 1am. The flames quickly spread to the nearby concrete building.

About 10 fire engines spent more than two hours fighting to control the blaze.

Investigators suspected the fire was started by an electrical short circuit.

The wooden building was used to store military uniforms, chinaware and documents, while weapons were kept in the concrete building. Both structures had been registered at the Fine Arts Department.
