First day: 58 dead, 517 injured

Road accidents killed 58 and injured 517 on Tuesday, mainly due to drunk driving.

Buri Ram province led with six fatalities while Chiang Mai and Surat Thani saw the highest number of accidents, at 23.

On Dec 30, the first of the Seven Dangerous Days campaign to promote road safety during the New Year holiday, 508 accidents were reported, Deputy Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said on Wednesday. 

According to data collected by the Road Safety Directing Center, the main causes were alcohol (36.61%) and speeding (23.82%).

By vehicle type, motorcycles led, with the highest number of accidents, representing 82.41%. The most accident-prone time of the day was between 4pm and 8pm.

Police took legal action against 71,168 traffic violators at their checkpoints. The main offence was riding a motobike without a helmet.

The first-day accident rate in 2014 was higher than in the 2013 campaign. Authorities said this was because in 2013 the start of the campaign was on Dec 27.
