Poll: Coup top political news

The May 22 coup was the top political news for Thais in 2014 while the Koh Tao murders drew the most interest in the crime category, according to a survey.

Expensive goods were the most-read news in the economic category while the Central Investigation Bureau chief's cartel led in the social category, according to the Top News poll compiled by Suan Dusit Poll unveiled on Wednesday.

The survey was done on 3,479 people during Dec 20-30, 2014.

The coup news led the politics category with 86.58% of the votes while the high cost of living was top economic news, with 95.31%.

The Pol Gen Pongpat Chayaphan case led social news, with 69.45%, while the Koh Tao murders were most-read crime news, with 59.13% of the votes.

On education, the 1.6-billion-baht embezzlement at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang ranked first, with 59.59%.

On sports, the Suzuki Cup victory of the Thai football team was the clear winner, with 92.44%.

On entertainment news, the divorce of actress Janie Tienphosuwan and Chonsawat "Ae" Asavahame ruled, with 82.47%.

On public heath, the Ebola outbreak in Africa captured the most interest, with 55.68%.

The most-read international news were the disappearance of a Malaysian Airlines flight (52.66%).
