Boy killed by New Year fireworks

A 13-year-old boy was killed when firecrackers he and his friends lit during New Year celebrations exploded in Ratchaburi Thursday.

Thanakorn Im-jit, 13, a Mathayom Suksa 1 (Grade 7) student at Thairath Witthaya 64 School in Pak Tho district, sustained serious head injuries in a firecracker explosion, said police who was alerted about the incident at about 20 minutes past midnight.

Wanna Thongdaeng, 39, mother of the boy, told police her son sought her permission to celebrate the New Year at a friend's house in tambon Wang Manao. During the celebration, two fireworks, filled in a metal pipe, were lit. But the fireworks exploded and flew at her son's head instead of shooting into the air, said a crying Ms Wanna as she held the body of her son. His friends rushed the boy to Pak Tho Hospital.

Police would call the victim's friends for questioning to find out the cause of the firecracker blast.
