Fire ravages Japanese-owned factory in Ayutthaya

Damage estimated at more than B10m

AYUTTHAYA - Fire ravaged a large Japanese-owned electronics factory at the Rojana Industrial Park Thursday, causing damage estimated at more than 10 million baht.

Flames spread through the Shin-Ei Precision (Thailand) plant for more than an your, gutting more than 250 sq metres of the U-Thai district warehouse before 18 fire trucks brought it under control. No one was injured.

Pol Maj Gen Sermkhid Sittichaiyakarn, chief of Ayutthaya police, led a team of fire-fighters to the estate around 11am Thursday. Electronics and computer parts in plastic baskets fuelled the fire.

Only security guards were at the factory, as most workers left for the provinces during the New Year's holidays.

Police believed damage was estimated at least 10 million baht. However, they had to await official damage assessment from Japanese executives.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, as police had to await forensic results.

Security guards on duty insisted there was nobody was inside the factory at the time. The plant's power supply system was still operating on the production line where the fire started.

Shin-Ei Precision is headquartered in Osaka and has five factories in Thailand.
