Pol Col Suwat Kaewduangto, deputy commander of Chiang Mai police, said police were watching the footage of the cameras around the area on Charoen Prathet road in Muang district in a bid to find out who placed the object on the roadside, about 500 metres from the French Consulate.

He suspected youngsters wanting to spoil the New Year celebrations in Chiang Mai were behind the fake bomb. They could drop it after seeing a makeshift police checkpoint in the area, he added.

Police and bomb experts were alerted of a suspicious object at 9am and sealed off the road for safety reasons.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal officials used a high-pressure water gun to destroy it. The object was an iron rod wrapped with electric wires without gunpower for explosion, he added.
