Woman killed in Phetchaburi

A woman was found dead in her rented room in Cha-am district of Phetchaburi province on Friday night, police said.

Police went to room No. 6 of a row-house for rent on Khlong Thian road in tambon Cha-am at about 9.20pm after being informed of the suspected crime by a man who claimed to be a friend of her boyfriend.

They found the woman lying dead in bed.  Her body was covered with a blanket and a pillow was on her face.  After removing the blanket and the pillow, the police found she had been strangled with a white cable cord. There were traces of bleeding from the mouth and nose. The lower part of her body was naked.

The woman was later identified as Lalita Chanchote, 33, of Ban Laem district of Phetchaburi province. She was an employee of a convenience store at the Cha-am market.  Her belongings including two mobile phones and a gold ring and necklaces had disappeared, but her motorcycle was still in front of her room.

Police learned from witnesses that on the night of Dec 31 Ms Lalita went to a dance party at Ban Bo Prakhon not far from her room and no one saw her after that.  She did not go to work on the following day.

The man who informed the police of the suspected crime, identified as Pawaris (surname withheld), said he went to the woman's room to check on her after receiving a telephone call from her boyfriend, a soldier at a military camp in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Her boyfriend became suspicious after he could not reach her by phone.

He found the room locked and no response when he called her name.  Looking through the glass windows, he only saw her lying in the bed, motionless, prompting him to inform the police.

Ms Lalita's body was sent to Phra Chomklao Hospital in Phetchaburi for an examination to establish the cause of her death and whether she had been raped.

Police said DNA tests on samples collected from the scene would also be carried out to find the culprit.
