Buses bulge as city dwellers return

More than 180,000 people are expected to flock to bus terminals nationwide on Sunday as they make their way back to Bangkok after the New Year break.

Back to reality: Traffic was slow on Mittraphab Road in Nakhon Ratchasima as people returned to Bangkok after the New Year break.

The number of travellers returning to the capital is expected to reach its peak as the holidays draw to a close.

State-owned bus operator Transport Company said it had increased the number of services it will run today, offering 7,000 round trips for about 140,000 travellers.

On Friday, Transport Company said it ran 6,276 round trips to ferry people back to their homes, with 119,000 passengers returning to the city.

The company is also working with relevant agencies to provide bus, van and taxi services to help travellers make onward journeys once they arrive in Bangkok.

A seven-day road safety campaign to reduce accidents over the New Year holidays comes to a close tomorrow.

A total of 227 people were killed and 2,163 injured in 2,104 road accidents nationwide between last Tuesday and Friday, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Friday alone saw 367 accidents, which caused 37 fatalities and 381 injuries.

Drink-driving was to blame for the largest proportion of the incidents.

Since the holiday period began, the department said about 37% of road accidents nationwide have been caused by drink-driving.

The second most frequent cause of collisions was speeding, at 19%.

The majority of the accidents over the festive period occurred on main roads and about 82% involved motorcycles.

Department chief Chatchai Promlert said the authorities must step up strict measures against drivers who drink during the last two days of the holidays.

He said police will also be making increased checks on drivers of private and public vehicles.

Drivers are at particular risk of accidents if they become tired or sleepy after long journeys, Mr Chatchai warned.
