'40,000 tourists' due to revel at Full Moon party

Many foreign tourists have extended their stays on Koh Phangan to join the popular Full Moon party, which is expected to draw about 40,000 revellers today, a senior tourism officer said.

The atmosphere on Hat Rin beach, where the monthly party is held, was lively yesterday, with tourists sunbathing on the white sand and swimming.

Many foreigners opted to extend their stay on the island to participate in the all-night Full Moon party, while local New Year party-goers began returning to Bangkok and their home provinces.

Wannee Thaipanich, president of the Koh Phangan Tourism Association, said in past years most foreign tourists had often checked out from hotels right after New Year celebrations. But as the Full Moon party takes place today, many tourists have decided to stay for the festival, boosting the local economy and sustaining the island’s festive mood, said Ms Wannee.

She estimated between 30,000 and 40,000 tourists would join the party. More tourists from nearby Koh Samui and other areas have also been flocking to Hat Rin.
