Provincial Police Region 5 commander Thanitsak Theerasawat on Sunday held a press conference to announce the arrest of Sompop Wongnangsua in Chiang Mai province.

Mr Sompop, 36, a native of Phrae’s Wang Chin district who works as a plumber at a hotel in Chiang Mai, is being held responsible for a fake bomb planted on a footpath on Charoen Prathet Road in Muang district on Jan 1. The object was placed near Anantara Chiang Mai Resort & Spa Hotel, opposite the French Consulate.

A bomb ordnance disposal team was called in to destroy the bomb-like device found at around noon on that day.

The fake bomb was contained in a fire extinguisher of a kind used by hotels. Police checked the serial number on the equipment that led to the arrest of Mr Sompop, said Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak.

Footage of closed-circuit cameras also captured the suspect placing the device.
