NY road toll hits 260 killed

The New Year holiday road toll has climbed to 260 after 33 people were killed on Saturday, the fourth of the "seven dangerous days".

The number of people injured climbed by 379 from 342 accidents, bringing the casualty figure so far to 2,542 from 2,446 accidents.

The Centre for the Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents said drink-driving caused 31.58% of the accidents, followed by speeding at 23.29 %.

Most — or 74.93% — of the accidents involved motorcycles.

Five provinces have reported no deaths — Trang, Phatthalung, Narathiwat, Sing Buri and Nakhon Phanom.

Chiang Mai has the highest number of accidents (109), deaths (14) and injuries (106).
