Girl killed in Surat Thani gun attack

A 17-year-old girl student was killed in a gun attack on a townhouse in Muang district of Surat Thani province early Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred at a one-storey townhouse in Soi 59 near Tapi University about five minutes after midnight.

According to witnesses, two young men, both wearing crash helmets, arrived in front of the townhouse on a motorcycle. The pillion rider opened fire at the house with a 9mm pistol and, before fleeing, threw a ping pong bomb inside.

Natcha Songwihok, 17, a second-year student of Surat Thani Commercial College, who was in the house, was hit once in the chest and twice in the left arm. She died instantly. The front door and window of the townhouse were damaged by the gunshots and the bomb.

Police recovered eight spent shells from in front of the house.

Pol Col Suwat Suksri, the Muang district police superintendent, said the house belongs to a woman who is the mother of Natcha's boyfriend. Natcha was with her boyfriend and his friends at the time of the attack, but nobody else was hurt.
