New Year's death toll passes 300

The death toll from road accidents during the "seven dangerous days" of holiday travel hit 302 on Sunday with 2,843 people hurt in 2,733 accidents, according to the centre for prevention and reduction of road accidents.

Prime Minister's Office Minister Panadda Diskul, acting as the centre's spokesman, said that on Jan 4 there were 287 accidents nationwide causing 42 deaths and 301 injuries.

Drink remained the cause of most accidents (27.53%), followed by speeding (26.83%).

The provinces with no reports of deaths were Trang, Narathiwat, Sing Buri and Nakhon Phanom.

Chiang Mai was the province with the highest numbers of accidents (122), deaths (15) and injuries (119).
