Border-patrol police and rescuers brought Monchai Thongtuptim, 38, up from the gorge on the famous Ta Monglai mountain in Muang district at 2.30pm and took him to the provincial hospital for a checkup.

Volunteers of the Sawang Prachuap Thammasathan foundation received a report from locals at 1am that they heard a man asking for help on the mountain and began searching for the victim. The man was located in a gulch covered by trees at 6am.

A helicopter from the Naresuan camp in Cha-am district of Phetchaburi province was called in in a bid to airlift him from the ravine but strong winds scuttled those plans.

Rescuers finally decided to scale the mountain on foot and climbed down via ropes to the bottom of the gorge to help the climber.

Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Veera Sriwattanatrakul said the man was safe but he was in weak conditions due to dehydration and could not tell why he went to the mountain and got struck there.

The mountain by the Gulf of Thailand is a landmark of the province.
