New Year's holiday road fatalities fell 7% this year compared to last, with 341 people killed during the "seven dangerous days" of the festive season that ended on Monday.

Interior permanent secretary Wiboon Sanguanpong said the holiday death toll marked a "satisfactory" drop from the 367 fatalities during the same period a year ago.

Drink driving remained the main cause of accidents, leading to 37% of the crashes. Motorcycles were involved in 82% of the collisions.

Chatchai Promlert, director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said cooperation from road users and tight law enforcement is needed to reduce accidents.

Chiang Mai proved the most deadly province, with 133 accidents, 18 deaths and 129 injured. Two provinces reported no deaths from road accidents — Sing Buri and Nakhon Phanom.

Bangkok proved relatively safe and 44 of the capital's 50 districts had no accidents at all. Nationwide, 656 districts, or 75%, of the country also survived the festive season accident-free. The deadliest time of day was between 4pm and 8pm.
