Rain for North, high seas for South

The Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a warning for people in Upper Thailand to be prepared for "variable weather."

The warning stated that from Jan 8-10, a rather-strong high-pressure system from China will cover the upper part of Thailand while the westerly trough will move across the North.

As a result, thunderstorms with gusts and hail are expected to occur in Upper Thailand, especially in the North and Upper Northeast. This will be followed by cooler weather with a drop of temperature by 6-8 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, the north-easterly monsoon, which has prevailed over the Gulf of Thailand and the South, will intensify. As a result, there will be more rain in the Far South. Swells in the Gulf of Thailand from Nakhon Si Thammarat southward will reach 2-3 metres.
