Ex-soldier killed in truck-bike crash

A former soldier was killed and a truck driver arrested after a 10-wheel truck hit the rear of a motorcycle in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday.

The body of the man, whose skull was fractured, was found lying in a pool of blood on Phetmatukhram Road in Muang district, said police who responded to the crash at 10.40am on Friday.

An overturned motorcycle belonging to the victim was found nearby. The victim was identified later as Sub Lt Pramote Wengsunnoen, 67, who worked as a security guard at Deelert Securicor Co.

Witnesses told police that a 10-wheel truck had slammed into the rear of the victim’s motorcycle while the latter was riding along Ratchasima-Jakkarat Road. The rider lost control of his bike and fell before the truck struck his head. The driver fled after the crash, but was apprehended shortly later.

Driver Somsak Khumthong, 40, told police he was shocked after the crash and did not stop his truck to see the victim. He was held in police custody on charges of reckless driving causing death.
