Russia seeks closer military ties

Russia has proposed a military cooperation deal with Thailand, covering technology, human resource development and armaments.

Thailand has responded with a counter-trade offer of agricultural products, Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said on Friday.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is scheduled to make an official visit to Thailand within the next two months.

Speaking after meeting Russia's Industry and Trade Minister, Denis V Manturov, Gen Prawit said the Russian government wanted more military cooperation with Thailand, including on military equipment. The two governments will establish working groups to discuss the arms procurements.

"We have to find out what the armed forces want to purchase and also the quantity. The government has proposed a trade deal with Russia for mutual benefit," he said. Gen Prawit, who is also deputy prime minister, said he had asked the armed forces to send a procurement plan for the 2016 fiscal year.

The Russian trade minister also met Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who emphasised the long-standing relationship between Thailand and Russia which enters its 118th year this year.

Gen Prayut also invited Russia to make an investment in similar areas, such as military industries, technology and infrastructure.

He said he hoped Russia will import more products from Thailand, particularly farm products and frozen food after the country started importing frozen pork from Thailand in December last year.
