Vote of confidence from businessmen

Businessmen from 25 sectors told the prime minister they have confidence in the junta's ability to address economic problems.

They had tea with Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House for four hours until 6pm on Monday.

"The premier listened to everyone and every problem. This bodes well. He asked us: 'Are you ready to move on with us?" they said.

Gen Prayut also revealed a plan to make Phuket the "Riviera of Asia" for cruise ships, they said.

"He also said he wanted to turn Thailand into 'Dubai of the East', the centre of shopping and tourism. But we need to provide more safety and security for tourists," they said.

Supaluck Umpuj, vice-chairwoman of The Mall goup, said the private sector did not worry about martial law, as it only served to make tourists feel safer.

"Safety is paramount and with soldiers around we feel secure. Without them, we don't know when they [political protesters] will fight again or which mob will shut down stores," she said.

She added tourist numbers had shot up with rooms overbooked in Phuket.

Suphachai Chearavanont of True group, proposed that the PM focus on the nine pors: goals, comparison, potential, transparency, evaluation and review, instilling, and leader.

Deputy government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the meeting today was with Gen Prayut as chief of the National Council for Peace and Order, as well as its economic team, not with Gen Prayut the prime minister.

"That's why MR Pridiyathorn Devakula, deputy prime minister for the economy, did not attend," he said.
