Cops nab former Pheu Thai MP for fraud

Police arrested a former Pheu Thai Party MP for alleged embezzlement of 11 million baht at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday before he was about to board a flight to Japan.

Pol Lt Chavarin Latthasaksiri, a former Ratchaburi MP and former deputy education minister, has been charged with embezzling 11 million baht from Bangkok Petrochemical Co (BPC) based in Cambodia.

Chavarin: Arrested at Suvarnabhumi

Dusit police station said the arrest was made according to a warrant issued by the Criminal Court on Jan 6. The former MP was accused of disbursing money which was wired to an association he chairs by mistake.

Pitak Srinavakul, the BPC representative, said the company buys its cement from the TPI Polene Public Limited Company.

Last year, BPC transferred money online to TPI Polene to pay for cement.

The transaction was hacked and somehow the money ended up being wired to the account of the Thai-Chinese Buddhism Culture Association, of which Pol Lt Chavarin is chairman.

The money was transferred to the association's account on May 7 and withdrawn on May 9 last year.

BPC informed Pol Lt Chavarin about the mistake but he demanded proof.

After the company provided him with the required proof, Pol Lt Chavarin refused to pay back the money, claiming it had been spent, according to the BPC.

Pol Lt Chavarin was freed on bail of one million baht.
