Police hunt Korean 'kidnap pair'

Police obtained an arrest warrant on Tuesday for a South Korean man suspected of kidnapping three fellow nationals for ransom.

Investigators were still waiting for another warrant for a second South Korean suspect.

Crime Suppression Division (CSD) deputy chief, Pol Col Nos Sawetlek, said investigators yesterday asked a court to issue arrest warrants for Kim Seung-cheul and Zhou Chung-chul. The court only issued a warrant for Mr Kim.

The alleged kidnappings occurred after police raided a condominium on Sukhumvit 71 Road on Jan 7 following a tip-off that several South Koreans were running an illegal online football betting operation.

During the raid, Myeong II-do, 33, Kim Kwang-hun, 30 and Lee Young-jun, 29 were arrested, police said.

Police took along Kim Seung-cheul as their interpreter during the raid.

On Friday, the three betting suspects were released and allegedly abducted by Mr Kim and Mr Zhou who demanded two million baht from them.

The victims later handed over 500,000 baht they kept at their condominium and contacted relatives to transfer another 200,000 baht to the kidnappers’ accounts.

The relatives then went to the police.

The kidnappers reportedly freed the victims at the Seacon Square mall when they learned that police were closing in on them.

A source at the CSD said investigators were looking at why the police who conducted the raid used Mr Kim as an interpreter and not a police translator.
