Joint panel looks to end border problems

Thailand and Cambodia have pledged to jointly resolve their remaining border problems, particularly illegal logging.

They also plan to transform the Thai-Cambodian border into an area of "peace and prosperity".

A number of bilateral issues were discussed yesterday at the 9th Joint Commission meeting chaired by foreign minister Tanasak Patimapragorn and his counterpart Hor Namhong in Cambodia's Siam Reap. One of the main topics was illegal logging, which continues along the border. Both sides agreed to allow the joint committee to suppress it and intensify their work to try and eliminate the problem.

On economic cooperation, both sides agreed to develop border areas and to turn them into areas of peace and prosperity under a plan to set up special economic zones in Sa Kaeo-Banteay Meanchey and Trat-Koh Kong.

The meeting also agreed to move ahead with plans to make four border checkpoints in to permanent ones.

Gen Tanasak and Hor Namhong expect the transport and economic agreements to help boost border trade and strengthen the countries' relationship when they join the Asean Community at the end of this year.

The two ministers also plan to hold activities to mark 65 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia.

The meeting was held despite recent media reports which said Cambodia had accused Thai soldiers of killing and burning alive two men thought to be Cambodian nationals.
