Fatal mugging pair nabbed

A man and his girlfriend were arrested yesterday in connection with the fatal assault on a man in Bangkok's Pomprap Sattruphai district on Saturday, police say.

Veera Sae Heng was walking near the July 22 roundabout when he was approached by suspect Worapong Kongwattana, 19, who asked Veera for 100 baht, police said.

Worapong: Charged with robbery, assault

When Veera refused to give him the money, Mr Worapong allegedly grabbed an iron bar and hit Veera on the head before running back to his girlfriend, Patcharaporn Khamsanit, 19, who was waiting by their motorcycle. Both fled the scene.

Pol Col Sakda Damapong, superintendent of Phlapphla Chai 2 police station, said a witness recorded the assault on video. It showed Mr Worapong hitting the victim with the iron bar.

The Criminal Court issued warrants for their arrest on Saturday after police identified the suspects who were arrested in Soi Suan Phak 3 in Bangkok's Taling Chan district.

They seized a 1.3-metre-long iron bar and a Honda motorcycle. The pair were charged with robbery and deadly assault.

According to police, Mr Worapong and his girlfriend drove around the July 22 roundabout that day and asked people for money. One person identified as Kiatisak Nanam gave Mr Worapong 20 baht when he was asked for cash.

Mr Worapong allegedly told police he was drunk and was upset with the victim who he claimed insulted his girlfriend when he asked him for money. Ms Patcharaporn admitted she was with him at the time of the incident but said she was not involved in the attack.
