Thais seek accord on border

Thailand will propose to Cambodia that the contested Chong Arn Ma border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani's Nam Yuen district be declared no-man's land, a military source said.

A joint Thai-Cambodia committee working on border demarcation will begin surveying the contested area seen as a watershed, or geographic dividing line, later this month, the source said.

Thai authorities will propose the area be designated as a no-man's land so both sides can benefit from joint development, the source said.

Earlier, Thailand ordered the border pass closed after Cambodian authorities brought in heavy machinery to dig a road in the area.

Thai and Cambodian officials met for talks last Thursday in a bid to ease tensions after hundreds of Thai troops were sent to the Chong Arn Ma border crossing to prevent Cambodia from carrying out the construction work.

After the meeting, Cambodia agreed to halt construction, the source said.

Army chief Udomdej Sitabutr will meet Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Banh during a two-day visit to Cambodia starting tomorrow.

Gen Udomdej, who is also deputy defence minister, yesterday said topics for discussion will include border cooperation between Thai and Cambodian soldiers.
