Man nabbed in IPO sale fraud case

Police have arrested another suspect in an initial public offering share sale fraud while he tried to leave Thailand.

Sommart Paojinda, 36, was taken into custody at Savarnabhumi airport. He was suspected of collaborating with Panasarn Somchiwita, 33, who was already arrested.

The officers accused Mr Sommart of public fraud, a charge he denied.

Ten people reported to the police late last year that Mr Panasarn and Mr Sommart had persuaded them to buy from them IPO shares of a number of newly listed companies. The duo reportedly failed to deliver 100 million baht worth of the shares.

Police said Mr Sommart was transferred some money from Mr Panasarn.

Mr Panasarn is a son of Santhat Somchiwita, an expert on the Department of Special Investigation Board and former permanent secretary of the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry.

Mr Sommart is also a distant relative of Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda.

Both claimed these relations to convince the victims to buy the shares from them.
