Ayutthaya hospital no longer such a sweet spot

It could soon be a lot harder to get hold of the Thai sweet roti saimai outside an Ayutthaya hospital if authorities get their way.

They have announced a crackdown on vendors selling the sweet outside Phra Na Khon Sri Ayutthaya Hospital if they fail to remove their stalls within five days.

The warning came after a combined force of army, police, Ayutthaya municipality and administrative officers yesterday inspected stalls selling the dessert on both sides of U Thong Road in front of the hospital as well as on roads alongside the facility.

The force was led by Col Ronnawut Ruangsawat, deputy director of the Internal Security Operations Command in Ayutthaya, and Pol Col Phumsit Nawang, chief of Ayutthaya police.

Complaints had been filed that more than 100 stalls selling the province’s most popular snack obstructed pavements and roads.

Vehicles belonging to the sellers and buyers were also said to have taken up the left lane of U Thong Road, regularly causing traffic jams in front of the hospital.

This made it difficult for patients and relatives to reach the hospital.

The force yesterday specified spots where vendors have to move out and gave final warnings for them to relocate within three or five days.

If the vendors ignore the order, charges will be laid and their stalls will be removed, officials said. Most of the vendors agreed to relocate, saying they are ready to cooperate if all the sellers follow suit.
