12 Vietnamese fishermen detained

SONGKHLA — The navy impounded two Vietnamese fishing boats and arrested 12 crew members on Sunday for illegally fishing in Thai waters.

A navy coastal patrol ship intercepted the trawlers north of Kra island in Pak Phanang district of Nakhon Si Thammarat and led them to a pier at the navy base in Songkhla, said Second Naval Area command chief Naris Prathumsuwan.

The captains of the fishing boats said they had come from Kieng Giang in southern Vietnam to fish in Thailand, said Vice Adm Naris.

The 12 Vietnamese fishermen were sent to Muang Songkhla police station. They are facing charges relating to illegal entry to Thailand under the Immigration Act and violating the act governing the right to fish in Thai waters.

In the past five months, 40 illegal Vietnamese trawlers, including Sunday’s seizures, were impounded for venturing into Thai waters. Most of them were caught in the seas off Nakhon Si Thammarat and Pattani provinces.
