Riverside houses near to collapse

Land subsidence caused by erosion along a kilometre-stretch of the Chao Phraya River bank in tambon Thachai of Muang district of Chai Nat province has left more than 20 houses in imminent danger of collapse, residents said.

Residents said one house collapsed on Dec 31 as the land suddenly subsided, and other houses were now on the brink of collapse.

The residents blamed the piling work of a construction project on the other side of the river, about 400-500m away. They said it had changed the river's current, causing erosion and subsidence.

At least 20 houses on their side of the river were sinking, developing cracks and looked likely to collapse at any time.

Tassaneeyawan Changkhid, 40, the owner of one of the houses under threat, on Sunday took reporters to see the cracks in her house, which their reports said was sinking on the side facing the river.

Mrs Tassaneeyawan said the six members of her family had moved some belongings out of the house to reduce the weight of the structurre.  Two elderly family members had moved to sleep outside the house for their safety, under a makeshift shelter.

She said the riverside residents in tambon Thachai want government agencies to take urgent action to prevent further land erosion and subsidence, and to save their homes.
