Cabinet makes May 4 extra holiday

The cabinet has approved May 4 as an extra public holiday to allow for a long weekend break from May 1 to May 5.

Kobkarn: Make May 4 all about promoting tourism.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said the extra holiday on May 4, a Monday, is hoped to stimulate spending and travel among Thais and boost the local tourism industry by 10%.

She said the long holiday during New Year had been successful in doing this.

May 1, which is Friday, is National Labour Day while May 5 marks Coronation Day. By declaring May 4 a special public holiday, people will have five days off.

However, May 1 is not a public holiday for government officials.

The five-day break to begin May will come three weeks after another five-day holiday for Songkran. The Thai New Year holiday is officially from Monday, April 13 through April 15, but most of the country will also take off Saturday and Sunday to make a long weekend.

The official New Year earlier this month was also a five-day holiday over a long weekend.
