Chiang Mai targets HK weddings

Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association is working with Hong Kong tour agents to promote the province as a venue for Hong Kong people to organise their wedding ceremony.

Association president Pornchai Jitnavasathien said  representatives from the Hong Kong and the Thai tourism sectors met recently to discuss ways to promote Chiang Mai as a desirable location for weddings.

The Thai consulate in Hong Kong had agreed to provide a one-stop service centre for couples who want a wedding ceremony in the northern province, offering them a choice of venues to tie the knot.

Mr Pornchai said that each year about 3,000 Hong Kong couples to get married in Thailand, and each spends two to three million baht on average, with 40-50 guests. The wedding segment brings in more than six billion baht of tourism revenue each year, and Chiang Mai wants to tap the market.

He said Chiang Mai hopes to attract up to 50 couples from Hong Kong to hold their wedding ceremony in the province this year.
