Second serial-rape suspect held

Police in Nong Khai province have detained a second man they believe may be a suspect in a serial rape case involving as many as 12 women.

The 43-year-old man has a build and features resembling the sketch and descriptions given by victims and witnesses, said assistant police chief Prawut Tavornsiri.

The man is the second suspect arrested in connection with the attacks, following an arrest in Nakhon Pathom on Jan 25. DNA from the first suspect reportedly matched samples recovered from seven victims, but police have said they cannot conclude for certain that he is the man they want.

The latest suspect, who was taken into custody at a checkpoint in Nong Khai on Friday, was convicted of rape in Bangkok in 1993 and was released in 2008, said Lt Gen Prawut.

A native of the North, the man worked in Samut Songkhram province after he was released from jail.

His DNA sample was taken and the test result will be known on Saturday, Pol Lt Gen Prawut said.

Police are hunting for a man who has allegdly raped 12 elderly or middle-aged women in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkhram between 2010 and 2015. Two of the victims were killed.

The most recent case occurred in Nakhom Pathom on Sunday. A man attacked a 73-year-old woman while she was sleeping in her bedroom after poisoning her dog to death.
