Poll: People believe US taking sides

A majority of people believe the United States is taking sides in the Thai political conflict, according to an opinion survey by National Institute of Development Administration (Nida Poll) released on Sunday.

The poll was conducted on 1,250 people of all educational levels and occupations throughout the country on Jan 26-27 to get their opinion about the recent visit to Thaland of US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel.  

Mr Russel said during his visit that the US "is not taking sides with any groups in the Thai political conflict".

Asked whether they attached importance to Mr Russel's visit, a majority or 41.92% paid little attention to it; 36.48% felt it was significant; and 21.60% had no comment.

To the question of whether they believed Mr Russel's remark that the US "is not taking sides with any groups in the Thai political conflict", 62.24% rejected it, 25.0% said they agreed with Mr Russel, and 11.76% had no comment.
