Britain, US issue alert

The British and United States embassies have urged their citizens in Thailand to be vigilant following the bomb blasts in front of Siam Paragon on Sunday night.

The US embassy advised Americans to exercise caution, especially in areas that attract large crowds.

"While the security situation has been generally peaceful over the last six months, this event emphasises that security incidents can occur without warning," the US advisory said.

Referring to the latest bombings and previous incidents in 2010 and 2012, the British embassy has told Britons residing in and visiting Thailand to remain vigilant and to monitor local security advice and media reports.

"There is a high threat from terrorism. Bomb and grenade attacks have been indiscriminate, including in places visited by expatriates and foreign travellers," the advisory said.

Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Russ Jalichandra said the ministry was briefing Thai diplomatic missions around the world about the inner-city blasts, which caused panic and two injuries. "All embassies can provide an explanation if they are asked," he said.
