Suspects caught with B280m cheque

Two men allegedly responsible for a string of break-ins into homes of wealthy families and foreigners in Phuket have been arrested with a cheque worth 280 million baht and other valuable items, police said on Saturday.

Saroj Suebsod and Prasert Thorthip were arrested in Thalang district  on Friday. Stolen valuables, cash and other items were seized from them.

The arrest followed complaints about cash and valuables being stolen from several houses in tambon Pa Klong of Thalang. Victims were mostly well-to-do families and foreigners, said police during a press conference in this resort province on Saturday. The two suspects were caught on surveillance footage in victims’ homes.

Police said Mr Saroj confessed to breaking into several houses in the district. They also said his gang mostly targeted the houses of foreigners and well-to-do families at night. 

Police also said Mr Saroj told them he unknowingly took the stolen cheque worth of 280 million baht from a house of a foreign businessman who had a Thai wife. The cheque was alledgely inside the foreigner's bag.

The suspects were handed over to Thalang  police for legal action.
