Video: Monk gives alms to bus boys

A Buddhist monk has been caught on camera giving food offerings to public bus drivers and conductors near Samphanthawong in Bangkok.

The video clip was posted on social media by Facebook user Nuy Jeam on Thursday.

"It's really a monk. At first I thought he was waving to get on a bus. When the bus stopped, he just handed food from his alms bowl to the conductor. He did this with many buses. Feeling happy to see this kind monk," Nuy Jeam wrote.

After the video went viral, a driver of No 111 bus confirmed that the monk regularly stood near a bus stop in front of the Suwan temple in Klong San to share the food offerings he received in the morning with bus staff who passed by the area.

The video mostly drew positive responses from Thai internet users. They said the monk probably had more food offerings in his bowl than he needed and was kind enough to share them with other people.

However, Sanook.com user kannikar_2609 questioned whether people who gave alms to the monk would receive merit in return, since the monk eventually gave them away.

Facebook user Danaya Ying Ying wrote that she had more respect for this monk than for the 1,000 monks who walked along roads strewn with flower petals in last week's Dhammakaya Temple pilgrimage march.
