Obec boss: No condom dispensers

The head of the Office of the Basic Education Commission said he will not allow condom-vending machines to be installed at Obec schools, saying they should be placed at other more-appropriate locations.

Secretary-general Kamol Rodklai said Monday that he strongly opposes the National Aids Committee's proposal to put condom machines in Obec secondary schools and vocational institutions under the Education Ministry to promote safe sex and reduce the risk of HIV infections.

"I strongly disagree and will give no permission for the installation of condom vending machines at Obec schools. It should be at other proper places, such as public toilets. There are so many approaches to promoting safer sex and Aids prevention among the young," Mr Kamol said.

"It is also a double-edged sword as it may mislead students into thinking of having sex at younger age," he added. "Condoms are widely available at nearby convenience stores. If someone asks for my permission, I will turn it down."

Chaiyapruek Serirak, secretary-general of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, said that the management at vocational schools and local communities would have the final say on whether the vending machines are installed or not.

"In principle, knowledge and understanding about sex education are the priority and condom machines are just one element in curbing sex-related problems," he said.

The National Aids Committee also plans to provide hygienic syringes to intravenous-drug addicts who are at high risk for HIV infection through needle sharing.

The proposals are part of the committee's prevention strategies for implementation over the next five years.
