Suvarnabhumi airport anticipates as many as 2.15 million passengers will pass through its terminal during the Chinese New Year festival next week, up about 20% on last year.

Airport director Praphon Patthamakitsakun said average daily arrivals were predicted at 165,789 passengers from Feb 14-26, which is the Chinese New Year period. The actual Chinese New Year falls  on Feb 19.

Of total estimated arrivals, 1.82 million would be from overseas and the rest domestic passengers.

Mr Praphon said there were a total of 563 chartered flights scheduled to arrive at the airport during the period -- 529 international flights and 34 domestic flights. Most of the chartered flights were from China with China Eastern Airlines planning the largest number at 144 flights.

When coupled with the regular services, the airport is expected to handle a total of 12,034 flights during the period, up 4.18% from the same period last year, an average of 926 flights a day.

He said the number of immigration officers and other staff on duty would be increased, including Chinese language translators, to accommodate increased number of passengers.
