Ten couples in Pattaya began an attempt Friday to break the world record for a dance marathon in time for Valentine's Day.

Nine Thai couples and one Canadian pair started dancing at 6am at the Ripley's Believe It or Not amusement centre at a beachfront mall and will need to be still going at 5.01pm on Valentine's Day to set a new record.

"The time to beat is 35 hours and one minute," said Somporn Naksuetrong, the manager of Ripley's in the Royal Garden Plaza.

Under the rules of the contest, the couples have to continuously move their legs, until a change of songs when they are given a 30-second respite. They are also allowed a five-minute break every hour to conduct "personal affairs."

The winner of the competition will receive a 200,000-baht cash prize and a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records.
