Policeman denies rape charge

Policeman denies rape charge

A Sai Mai police officer accused of attempted rape by a university student reported to Lat Phrao police early Monday to acknowledge three charges brought against him.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Nimit Kaechaiyaphum was charged with luring a person with intent to commit lewd acts with them, committing malicious damage to property, and physical assault. He denied all the charges and said he would fight the case in court.

The 19-year-old student, whose name and university are withheld, alleged that the officer offered her a ride home from Sai Mai police station on Wednesday, but instead took her to a marn rood (curtained) hotel in Lat Phrao area, and tried to rape her. She managed to escape and registered a complaint with Lat Phrao police.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Nimit said he only gave her a ride home, and would discuss other details only in the  court.

He was allowed police bail after he placed his position as a policeman as collateral.

The 19-year-old sophomore, who was accompanied by Pavena Hongsakul of the Pavena Hongsakul Foundation for Women and Children, met the chief of Sai Mai police station Tawatkiat JIndakuansanong on Monday afternoon and asked for a report on progress in the case. The complainant passed over a shirt she was wearing at the time of the alleged assault to Pol Col Tawatkiat as evidence.

She sought help from the foundation on Saturday, saying she feared unfair treatment by police after allegedly being contacted by Pol Snr Sgt Maj Nimit who she said offered her 25,000 baht to withdraw her complaint.

The officer has been temporarily dismissed from duty pending possible prosecution and a disciplinary inquiry by the Metropolitan Police Bureau's Division 2.
