Storms damage 500 houses in NE

More than 500 houses in Si Songkhram and Tha Uthen districts of Nakhon Phanom province were damaged by severe rainstorms that also toppled power poles and large trees on Monday night.

Severely hit were villages in tambons Ban Kha, Thabo Songkhram, Nakham and Si Songkhram of Si Songkhram district. Big trees, advertising signboards and power poles brought down, causing blackouts  in many areas.

In tambon Ban Kha nearly 200 houses were damaged by the storm.  Five buildings at Ban Kha School, which has about 300 students, were damaged, two of them badly.  The school has been temporarily closed for repairs.  The full damage had yet to be assessed.

In Tha Uthen district, about 20 houses in tambons Tha Uthen and Chaiburi were hit by the storm.

Nakhon Phanom governor Adisak Thep-art on Tuesday morning sent disaster prevention and mitigation and local administration officials to examine the damage and organise assistance to residents.

Maj Gen Sonthaya Sricharoen, commander of the Nakhon Phanom Army Circle, despatched soldiers to storm-hit villages to repair damaged houses and school buildings. Mobile medical teams were also sent to troubled areas.

He said temporary shelters would be set up for people left homeless.
