The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) will open a phase of the bike lane system in Ngamwongwan area in March.

Exat governor Aiyanut Tinaphai said on Thursday the 2.7 kilometre long lane for cyclists to be opened next month will run from Ngamwongwan to Samakki roads under the expressway sector between Prachachuen to Pang Pa-in district in Ayutthaya.

The bike road will be extended to Chaeng Wattana road in the future with a service stop for bikers, toilets, food shops and parking areas once the project is fully completed, he added.

Exat is the second agency under the Transport Ministry after Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) to introduce a bike route for cyclists.

AoT has built a 24km bike loop around Suvarnabhumi airport for bike enthusiasts.

Deputy director-general of the Land Transport Department Wattana Patarachon said the agency will hold a roadshow to promote safe biking for people in Bangkok starting at Suan Rot Fai on Saturday. The event runs from 3pm to 6.30pm.

"More Thais are turning to bicycles for commuting and exercise. But not all of them know how to properly bike on roads which could prevent accidents," the official said.
