Swedish tourist dead in Rayong hotel

A 54-year-old Swedish man was found dead inside a hotel room in downtown Rayong on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The body of the tourist was found on the floor, with his chin resting on the bed in his room at a Rayong hotel in tambon Tha Pradu, said Pol Lt Thawat Norseeha, a deputy officer at Muang police station. He said it was reported about 3pm.

The man's passport identified him as Mats Johan Olausson, 54, from Sweden.

The tourist wore only shorts and there were seven empty bottles of whisky and several empty cans of beer in the room. Police found no traces of a struggle. He was believed to have died at least 24 hours before his body was found, said a doctor at Rayong Hospital.

Withoon Boonprasert, 50, the hotel staffer who alerted police, said the Swedish tourist had stayed at the hotel for seven days. He noticed that the guest had never gone downstairs for meals and had not paid for his room.

He became suspicious and went and knocked on the door. There was no response. He then used a spare key to open the door and found the body.

Pol Maj Gen Chumphon Chanthachamrassil, chief of Rayong police, said police had thoroughly inspected the room and found no evidence suggesting a fight. Investigators initially believed alcohol consumption might be a possible cause of his death.

The man's body would be sent to the Institute of Forensic Science in Bangkok for a post mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
